“I have always loved to paint and draw, particularly flowers and natural subjects. I grew up in Llangelynnin, on the edge of Snowdonia, before moving to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) with my family, where I lived for 11 years.
I spent much of my time outdoors, exploring and wandering, always with a sketchbook in my rucksack. I now live on the Llŷn Peninsula, and not much has changed.
I work mainly in watercolour, directly from life, and seldom change the painting once back in the studio, as I find this can take away from the freshness that comes from capturing things in the moment.
Wildflowers, plants, and insects tend to be my main subjects. Spring and summer are when I paint the most, when the plants and flowers are in bloom, and the weather allows for more outdoor painting time.
Capturing things in the moment can lend much interest to a piece, with weather and light changes, and insects flying in and out. I also find that when focusing on a small area, I notice more the longer I look; tiny beetles appear, a spider I had somehow overlooked for the first hour starts repairing a web, the sun appears and the grasses shimmer purple. It takes a while to get your eye in, but once you do, a whole world emerges.
I was taught to love and respect the natural world, and find a lot of peace and solace there; my work is a way of trying to share this beauty with others, and hopefully encourage people to look more closely while out and about.”
